Rivian R2 vs. Tesla Model Y, an Edmunds electric SUV showdown

In the electric SUV matchup between Rivian's R2 and Tesla's Model Y, Edmunds conducted a head-to-head comparison to determine which model offers the better value. Both vehicles have affordable starting prices, with the Rivian R2 beginning at around $45,000 and Tesla's Model Y starting at approximately $41,380. However, the Rivian R2's range varies from 275 miles in the base Standard model to 345 miles in the Standard Long Range, while the Tesla Model Y ranges from 294 miles in the all-wheel-drive base model to 357 miles in the rear-wheel-drive Premium version.

All-wheel-drive versions of both vehicles are rated lower than their rear-wheel-drive counterparts. The Tesla Model Y has access to Tesla's extensive Supercharger network, which the R2 also shares due to their common charging ports. Both models offer a plethora of standard tech, including advanced driver aids, wireless smartphone charging pads, large touchscreens, Google-based navigation, and camera systems for safety monitoring.

Additionally, both vehicles feature hands-free driving modes, with Tesla's Full Self-Driving system being particularly noteworthy.

In terms of interior comfort and utility, the Tesla Model Y rides more smoothly over bumps, and its seats provide a more supportive experience. In terms of cargo space, the Rivian R2 edges out the Model Y, offering 90.1 cubic feet of total capacity compared to the Model Y's 75.5 cubic feet, while also providing greater underfloor storage. The Rivian R2 also has a higher maximum towing capacity at 4,400 pounds, compared to the Model Y's 3,500 pounds. Ultimately, the Rivian R2 offers more utility and a roomier back seat, while the Tesla Model Y provides greater comfort and third-row versatility.
