Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 platform could herald the age of camera-equipped earbuds — but are we ready for that?

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 platform may pave the way for camera-equipped earbuds, but are we prepared for this development? The platform, described as the "first premium audio platform purpose-built for personal AI," aims to turn headphones and earbuds into "intelligent companions" that can understand, assist, and adapt throughout the day.

The advanced AI-adaptive ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) system in the platform can optimally adjust noise reduction based on factors like fit, movement, and environmental noise.

According to Sarah McMurray, Staff Manager for Product Marketing at Qualcomm, the platform's capabilities extend beyond mere noise cancellation. It can intelligently switch between ANC and transparency modes, enhance audio quality, and facilitate AI-powered assistance such as real-time translation, contextual assistance, personalized hearing, and multimodal interactions that combine audio, vision, and AI.

However, the consumer readiness for such advancements remains uncertain. While 70% of users express a desire for advanced AI capabilities in wearable devices, current wearables do not fully combine these features. Additionally, privacy concerns surrounding camera-equipped earbuds pose a challenge. Qualcomm's Senior Vice President and General Manager of XR, Wearables, and Personal AI, Ziad Asghar, stated that the company is actively addressing these concerns by providing users with control over how much information they share, such as the ability to obfuscate faces and detect them for context-based AI processing.

Despite these factors, Qualcomm remains optimistic about the future potential of AI-assisted audio wearables.
