Western Australia is grappling with a child safety crisis, with recent reports highlighting the urgent need for intervention. South Hedland, a region known for its mining wealth, is experiencing stark social and economic disadvantages, particularly among Aboriginal residents. The crisis has been brought to light by multiple media outlets reporting on tragic deaths and the living conditions of children in impoverished communities.

Aboriginal women in the Pilbara have been warning about these issues for years, describing substance abuse, family violence, mental health concerns, and housing problems that compromise children's safety. Despite some investments, the child protection system is overwhelmed, with 41% of 12,529 child protection investigations in 2024-25 involving First Nations children.

Repeated involvement in the system indicates persistent family needs and the limitations of relying solely on statutory child protection. Instead of relying on child removals, which can create new risks, targeted early support and practical solutions are needed. Aboriginal community-controlled organizations have shown success in diverting families from the child protection system, with a 78% diversion rate.

Family-led decision-making has also shown promise, reducing substantiated child maltreatment and entry into out-of-home care. While the WA government has committed $7.2 million for a family-led decision-making pilot, expanding it across Western Australia is necessary to address the crisis. Aboriginal communities have already provided the solutions; now it's time to listen and act on them.
