PIA to launch direct Pakistan-Maldives flights amid fleet expansion

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) intends to introduce direct flights between Pakistan and the Maldives upon the addition of new aircraft to its fleet, announced by the airline's chief executive on Wednesday. This move comes as both nations aim to enhance tourism, trade, and people-to-people links. PIA's CEO, Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Amir Hayat, disclosed this during a meeting with a high-ranking Maldivian delegation led by Speaker of the National Assembly Abdul Raheem Abdulla at PIA's headquarters.

The delegation, comprising the Maldivian high commissioner, second secretary, deputy leader, and other senior officials, is currently in Pakistan as a state guest. During the meeting, both parties discussed the launch of direct flights, which are projected to bolster tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchanges. Abdulla emphasized that improved air connectivity would catalyze significant advancements in mutual trade, tourism, and public contacts between the two countries.

Hayat stated that direct flights to Maldives will commence once the airline's fleet is expanded. PIA has been actively working to modernize and expand its fleet. Earlier, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb engaged with Boeing Global President Dr Brendan Nelson to discuss PIA's fleet modernization. Aurangzeb expressed satisfaction with Boeing's confirmation that a revised proposal for acquiring new aircraft would be shared with PIA, along with options for earlier delivery slots and interim leasing arrangements.

The minister highlighted PIA's privatisation plans and the intention to outsource the management of major airports. He also appreciated Boeing's support for aviation safety, regulatory engagement, and the restoration of direct flights to the United States, while underscoring Pakistan's promising long-term aviation growth potential.
