Peter Okoye confirms receiving $800k PSquare royalties

Nigerian musician Peter Okoye, once a part of the renowned group P-Square, disclosed during a legal proceeding in Lagos that he received over $800,000 in music royalties. This revelation came while testifying before the Federal High Court in Lagos, where he was questioned by the lawyer representing his elder brother, Jude Okoye.

The information was published on September 23, 2026. The payments were made through SACEM, a French entity responsible for collecting and distributing royalties to songwriters, composers, and music publishers. Peter affirmed that the money belonged to him and his twin brother, Paul Okoye, as they were the creators of the songs. He stated that Jude was not entitled to the disputed payments, adding that he and Paul wrote, composed, and produced P-Square's songs, although Jude directed some music videos.

The court also studied royalty records, which confirmed that Peter received records covering royalties from 2016 to 2022. He explained that he requested this information as some individuals were interested in purchasing the P-Square music catalogue. The case centers around allegations against Jude Okoye and his company, Northside Music Limited, who are facing charges from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged financial offenses.

Jude has pleaded not guilty. The court has not yet made a decision on the disputed royalties or the allegations in the case, and proceedings are ongoing, with a further hearing expected on December 8 and 9, 2026. This development has drawn attention to the financial arrangements surrounding some of P-Square's music, given that Peter and Paul once dominated Nigeria's music scene before parting ways. The latest court proceedings have renewed interest in these financial matters.
