No peace with Israel 'if rights of Syrians are usurped', Sharaa says

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa asserted on Tuesday that no peace with Israel can be achieved if the rights of Syrians are violated, as Israel continues its aggression and occupation. Speaking at an Atlantic Council event during the UN General Assembly in New York City, Sharaa emphasized that Israel's air strikes on Syria and the recent occupation of new territories, including the Golan Heights, are ongoing concerns.

Despite diplomatic efforts, Israel often reaches nearly 90% of a security agreement before withdrawing for various reasons. Sharaa stressed that Syria cannot discuss peace while Syrian rights are being usurped and that the United States, under President Trump, also recognizes the Golan Heights as occupied Syrian territory. He suggested giving New Jersey to Israel instead, eliciting laughter from the audience.

Sharaa proposed an international committee to verify concerns about the Golan Heights' status. He also mentioned the possibility of empowering the Lebanese government to improve conditions and stability, as part of a regional peace deal. Sharaa addressed past issues, including his 9/11 pledge to al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri when he was 13 years old, stating he had no involvement with the 2001 attacks.
