Nkrumah’s ideas must be given practical meaning – P.L.O. Lumumba

Renowned Pan-Africanist and anti-corruption advocate Professor P.L.O. Lumumba has called on Africans to move beyond mere rhetoric and give the ideas of Ghanaian leader Kwame Nkrumah real-world significance. Speaking in an interview, Prof. Lumumba highlighted that the 117th anniversary of Nkrumah's birth should serve as an opportunity not only to honor the former leader but also to assess if Africa is progressing towards his envisioned ideals.

He expressed that listening to Nkrumah's daughter, Samia Nkrumah, speak about her father further cemented his belief in the enduring relevance of Nkrumah's ideas.

Prof. Lumumba emphasized that those who subscribe to Nkrumah's vision bear the responsibility to ensure his principles are translated into tangible actions, rather than being limited to commemorative events. He cautioned against reducing Nkrumah's legacy to mere slogans, speeches, and monuments, while neglecting the pressing challenges facing African societies.

According to Prof. Lumumba, Nkrumah would have urged Africans to reflect on their progress in critical areas such as food security, scientific advancement, freedom of movement, defense, policy coordination, and economic self-reliance.

The Pan-Africanist questioned whether African nations had developed sufficient scientific and technological capabilities to enhance the quality of life for their people. He also pondered if Africans had the freedom to move across borders without impediments. Furthermore, Prof. Lumumba inquired about Africa's capacity to protect itself and coordinate its policies.

He concluded that economic self-reliance was a crucial aspect of the questions Nkrumah would pose to Africans in the modern era, emphasizing the need to produce what is consumed and consume what is produced.
