The European Commission is awarding approximately 41,000 free travel tickets across Europe in October. These tickets are open to 18-year-olds from European Union (EU) countries and certain associated countries, according to the Federal Agency for International Youth Work (IJAB). Participants must have been born between January 1st and December 31st, 2008. Around 7,000 DiscoverEU tickets are reserved for participants from Germany.

The aim of this initiative is to give young people a travel experience that illustrates what it means to be part of the EU. The application period runs from October 1st to October 15th. Applicants must take a quiz about the European Union and EU initiatives for young people. The EU Commission reviews the applications and selects the winners. Since 2018, 473,000 young people have taken advantage of this offer.

Those selected can explore Europe for up to 30 days starting from March 1st, 2027. The young adults themselves decide how they will use the tickets. DiscoverEU is part of the EU Erasmus+ program. Since 2018, nearly 473,000 young people have utilized this opportunity. It is also possible to apply as a group or connect with other DiscoverEU travelers through a Facebook group.

Winners will receive travel passes to travel across Europe for a month. During this period, they can take the train on seven days. Generally, young people travel using the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation. Alternative transportation methods are also allowed, taking into account the travel distance or for those living on islands.
