Milei at the UN: "The Malvinas are a national cause for us"

Argentine President Javier Milei urged the United Nations General Assembly to address what he called unilateral British actions in the Falkland Islands during his speech at the UN on Wednesday. Milei reiterated that the Malvinas are a national cause for Argentina, emphasizing the issue thrice at the beginning of his address. He criticized the UN for seemingly turning a blind eye to the dispute, highlighting the fact that the Assembly has yet to enforce Resolution 31/49, which seeks to prevent unilateral modifications during the dispute.

Milei claimed that despite the passage of 50 years, the situation remains unchanged and the unilateral modifications persist. He argued that the principle of self-determination does not apply to the Falkland Islands, as it is a population settled by an occupying power on disputed territory, and reiterated that this stance has been expressed in numerous UN resolutions.

Argentina's foreign minister, Pablo Quirno, also addressed the body, expressing full willingness to resume bilateral negotiations and calling the UK's actions unlawful.
