Lionel Richie is taking a break from performing following a heart procedure

Lionel Richie, the renowned singer, is taking a hiatus from touring as he recuperates from a heart procedure, according to a representative quoted by The Associated Press. The procedure was a common surgery for atrial fibrillation, also known as A-fib, which is a condition characterized by an irregular heartbeat. A-fib can lead to serious complications such as blood clots, stroke, and heart failure. It is estimated that more than 10 million Americans are affected by this condition, primarily those above the age of 60.

The 77-year-old singer underwent the surgery and the medical team declared the procedure successful. Richie told the representative, "The doctor said everything went perfectly," and expressed that he is feeling well. However, he will take some time off to ensure a full recovery before returning to his stage performances.

Richie had previously postponed two concerts in June due to falling ill and earlier this month, rumors circulated online about his hospitalization following a performance in St. Louis. He was set to perform alongside Earth, Wind & Fire in San Francisco, Chicago, and Columbus in September and October. Currently, the singer is scheduled to begin his "King of Hearts" residency shows at the Wynn Las Vegas in October and November.

An Oscar and four-time Grammy Award-winning artist, Richie first gained fame as part of The Commodores before embarking on a successful solo career. His hit songs include "Hello," and he is also credited for co-writing the iconic charity single "We Are the World" alongside Michael Jackson.
