Ukraine and Iran are involved in separate but overlapping conflicts

Ukraine and Iran find themselves embroiled in separate, yet interconnected conflicts that have heightened tensions between the two nations. In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while Iran has been at war with the US and Israel since late February of the same year. Despite the physical distance between the two countries, with Kyiv and Tehran lying over 1,500 miles apart, their conflicts share common factors.

Russia and Iran have a close strategic and military alliance, and Iran has provided Russia with drones, missiles, and other weaponry to support its war efforts in Ukraine. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered to assist other nations, such as the US, in countering Iranian drones and missiles. Ukraine has also dispatched drone experts to the Middle East to aid allies in defending against Iranian attacks and has signed defense pacts with Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Tensions escalated further in July when Ukraine conducted airstrikes on ships carrying military supplies from Iran to Russia, resulting in one fatality and an Iranian threat of retaliation. Following the incident, Ukrainian and Iranian foreign ministers engaged in a phone call, with Ukrainian officials asserting that their actions were defensive and not intended to harm civilians. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later confirmed that the attack was unintentional.
