Leaders push for stronger AI safeguards at UN as Trump touts 'Super Intelligence'

Visions for the future of artificial intelligence are being discussed at the United Nations, where world leaders are addressing the potential threats and promises of AI. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for stronger oversight of AI, warning of the dangers of machines making life-and-death decisions and urging the world to prevent the use of "killer robots."

Guterres also emphasized the need to advance responsible practices for AI development and the additional safeguards required to mitigate risks. The UN Security Council will later discuss ways to control AI technology, involving prominent figures in the field. US President Donald Trump opposes regulating AI, arguing that the term "artificial intelligence" does not accurately represent the technology and likening AI safety concerns to climate change warnings.

He noted that the same individuals who predicted dire consequences from global warming now claim AI will bring about a total disaster. Numerous European countries, including Britain and France, have advocated for binding safety measures for advanced AI, fearing that its development could surpass the ability to control it. Britain plans to establish global AI standards during its G20 presidency in 2027 and is partnering with the US to detect cyberattacks on critical infrastructure.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for pooling investment capabilities to create open-source AI models, emphasizing the need to resist dependence on major powers like China and the US.
