Kenneth Branagh embraces action hero role — to get in shape

TORONTO, Sept 23 — Kenneth Branagh, renowned for his Shakespearean roles, found a new challenge in his latest film Mayday. As Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent, Branagh embraced the action hero role to surprise both the audience and himself. The British actor, who portrayed a character capable of taking on formidable enemies with just a pen, dedicated himself to the role, both physically and mentally.

To prepare for the action sequences, Branagh practiced yoga and trained methodically to master the fight choreography. "It was a great chance to get a little fitter," the 65-year-old actor said with a laugh.

The film, produced by Apple TV, revolves around a perilous journey to Moscow between Ustinov and co-star Ryan Reynolds. Ustinov, obsessed with American culture, particularly Top Gun, helps Reynolds, a Navy pilot stranded in Soviet territory, realize that not all Russians are emotionless drones. In turn, Reynolds reveals that not all Americans are good-natured heroes.

Branagh praised the effortless chemistry between himself and Reynolds, which was evident from their very first conversation on set. Their bond has only grown stronger since the film wrapped, with the pair frequently discussing football. "When we meet at work or when promoting the film, it just carries on," Branagh said. "Wherever we see each other, we just talk about football."
