Jamba Juice stores are closing, driven by franchise terminations, as national retail footprint shrinks

Jamba Juice is facing a troubling trend as it reduces its national retail footprint, with 130 franchise agreements terminating in the past three years. The smoothie chain's 2026 franchise disclosure document (FDD) highlights the risk of opening a Jamba Juice location, stating it could be a higher-risk investment than other franchises with lower turnover rates.

The majority of these terminations – 116 since the start of 2023 – stand out when compared to its competitors. Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Planet Smoothie each experienced only 28 and 4 terminations respectively over the same period. Jamba Juice, owned by GoTo Foods, a retail conglomerate backed by private equity firm Roark Capital Group, does not explicitly state why the terminations are occurring, but the document indicates franchisees can be terminated for failing to pay debts or refusing inspections.

However, franchisees cannot terminate a Jamba Juice location unless permitted by state laws. The number of Jamba Juice locations has dropped from 710 at the end of last year to 682, a 28-store decline since the beginning of 2023. California, where roughly half of the company's stores are located, has seen the largest net decline with 38 fewer stores.

New Jersey also experienced a significant drop from 8 stores to just 1. Despite a resurgence in pop-culture, with the Jamba Juice brand featured in HBO's critically acclaimed series DTF St. Louis, Jamba Juice locations continue to close. Some of the closed locations include 6000 J St Student Union in Sacramento, CA; 6050 Main St in American Canyon, CA; 1570 Disneyland Dr in Anaheim, CA; and 6440 N MacArthur Blvd in Irving, TX.

Jamba Juice has not released a complete list of closed stores and plans to open 37 new locations this year.
