Ireland boss Hallgrimsson says timing of Israel’s remarks ‘not clever’

Ireland's national team manager, Heimir Hallgrimsson, has admitted his recent comments about the Israel-Gaza conflict were unwise, as the nation prepares to face Israel in the Nations League. The Irish manager sparked a diplomatic controversy last week with his statement, "We're not playing with genocide, we're playing against Israel."

The Israel Football Association swiftly responded, branding Hallgrimsson as "stupid, ignorant, and hypocritical." Prime Minister Micheal Martin defended Hallgrimsson, urging the Israel FA to retract its remarks. Ireland is set to host Israel in Debrecen, Hungary, on Sunday, followed by another match against the team in Backa Topola, Serbia, a week later.

The Football Association of Ireland opted for a neutral venue for the home match due to logistical difficulties. Hallgrimsson acknowledged that his comments may have diverted attention from the upcoming game against Kosovo, which Ireland will play on Thursday. Over 160 Irish athletes have signed a letter urging the national team to boycott the Israel matches, with protests planned in Dublin.

The FAI had previously petitioned UEFA to suspend Israel, but their request was denied. Ireland has also decided to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria next year in response to Israel's actions in Gaza, which began after Hamas's 2023 attacks. Ireland has a history of supporting the Palestinian cause, recognizing a Palestinian state in 2024 along with Spain and Norway, and frequently criticizing Israel over its conduct in Gaza. Israel denies any genocide allegations.
