ASU Hockey Coach Declines to Answer Questions About Player’s Collapse

Arizona State University hockey coach Greg Powers refused to comment on the collapse of freshman player Matthew Mayich during a preseason workout on August 20. Mayich, a St. Louis Blues draft pick, fell into a coma after the incident. The school released a preliminary report detailing the events leading up to Mayich's collapse, which did not assign blame.

The report outlined conditions, weather, activities, and actions taken following the incident. It acknowledged that the athletic staff had not reviewed the training plan for the workout, which was led by a former Green Beret, Tim Ziesel. Mayich, who was medically cleared by ASU staff, had participated in three voluntary preseason workouts before the event.

A family attorney for Mayich stated that the exertional heat stroke, which limited oxygen to his brain, was unlikely to be fully recoverable. The ASU Police Department is investigating the incident, which prevented Powers from addressing the situation at a media availability. Powers affirmed his position as head coach, citing his 20-year tenure with ASU.

No roster changes have been reported since Mayich's collapse, and some Canadian Hockey League players on the ASU roster could potentially return to their clubs.
