Iran's hardliners make room for diplomacy as Pezeshkian arrives in New York for UNGA

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, amidst a backdrop of renewed US-Iranian diplomacy and uncertainty over a potential meeting with President Donald Trump. The visit comes as senior US and Iranian officials engage in talks that could pave the way for further diplomatic contact between the two nations.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the 193-member body on Wednesday. His mission, as emphasized by Iranian officials, is to defend Iran's rights and interests on the global stage. However, hardliners in Iran have expressed caution against allowing the visit to become an opportunity for conciliatory gestures.

Despite the pressure from Iran's hardline establishment, Pezeshkian insisted on attending the UN General Assembly to present Iran's strength and grievances. Senior figures within Iran's security establishment, including military adviser Yahya Rahim Safavi, have argued that negotiations can coexist with resistance, framing diplomacy and military readiness as complementary rather than contradictory.

Kayhan newspaper, a conservative publication, warned against viewing New York as a platform for negotiations, urging Pezeshkian to instead present Iran's case as "a courtroom for American crimes." Other hardline voices have questioned Iran's decision to attend the General Assembly altogether.

Nevertheless, the atmosphere surrounding Pezeshkian's visit suggests that diplomacy is gaining ground. Earlier, US President Donald Trump reported that his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, had a "very good" meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, signaling progress towards a potential deal. Witkoff later stated that the two sides had completed a round of discussions that he hoped would prove constructive and promising.

Iranian officials have underscored that the delegation's mission is to advocate for Iran's rights and interests at international forums. The visit allows Pezeshkian some political room to engage in negotiations without appearing to concede to Washington. Despite the uncertainty surrounding a potential meeting between the two presidents, reformists have called for a meeting that could pursue lasting peace, highlighting past missed opportunities for such encounters.
