IIT Bombay panel to investigate student's suicide

IIT Bombay has established a 10-member high-level committee to investigate the death of B Tech student Sahil Wakode, who was found hanging in his hostel room on September 18. The investigation is being conducted by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which is exploring all possible angles of the case. Faculty member Suryanarayan Doolla, named in the FIR for allegedly abetting suicide on grounds of caste discrimination, has been placed on leave to allow for a fair and impartial probe.

Doolla, who is also the dean of Administrative Affairs at IIT Bombay, was removed from his position following student and political activist protests. Sahil's parents claim he had told them about caste-based slurs he faced, and they are demanding the immediate arrest of IIT Bombay Director Shirish Kedare and Doolla. MNS president Raj Thackeray stated that the incident highlights flaws within the education system, urging students not to get entangled in caste-based politics and instead focus on addressing these issues.

ABVP national general secretary Virendra Singh Solanki emphasized the importance of waiting for a thorough investigation before taking any action and stressed that only those found responsible should be held accountable.
