Hoe Yean, Arvin make historic Asian Games 200m freestyle final

On Wednesday, Malaysia secured two spots in the final of the men's 200m freestyle swimming event at the Tokyo Asian Games through Khiew Hoe Yean and Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal. Hoe Yean swam in Heat 4, finishing third with a time of 1:48.96, behind China's Zang Zhan Shuo (1:48.68) and Xu Haibo (1:48.84). Arvin also placed third in Heat 3, with a 1:49.46 time behind Tatsuya Murasa (1:47.60) of Japan and Ali Hassan (1:48.66) of Bahrain, who had the fastest times in their respective heats.

Although they fell short of breaking Welson Sim's national record of 1:47.36, their seventh and ninth-place finishes in their heats qualified them for the final to be held later that day. This marks the duo's second consecutive finals appearance at the Games, as they previously finished fifth in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay alongside Ananda Lim and Jaydan Tan on Monday, setting a national record of 7:18.79.

Hoe Yean marked his second individual final appearance at the Asian Games, having previously finished fourth in the men's 400m freestyle final at the 2022 Hangzhou Games. Unfortunately, Bryan Leong missed out on the men's 100m butterfly final, clocking a time of 54.19 to finish fifth in Heat 2 and 14th overall out of 34 competitors.

Goh Li Jie also performed poorly, finishing eighth in Heat 3 with a time of 56.77 and occupying the 28th spot overall.
