Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for 2006 Sexual Assault

Harvey Weinstein, the 74-year-old co-founder of Miramax and The Weinstein Company, received a 15-year prison sentence on September 23 for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in New York in 2006. The Manhattan Supreme Court sentenced Weinstein after hearing from Haley, prosecutors, and Weinstein himself. Prosecutors had asked for 20 years, while Weinstein's legal team requested a shorter sentence.

During the hearing, Weinstein apologized for his actions but continued to deny any sexual assault. Haley described the assault as having profoundly affected her life and sense of security, as well as the multiple legal proceedings causing her ongoing trauma. Justice Curtis Farber expressed that Weinstein's career achievements had been overshadowed by his treatment of Haley, stating that he had "thrown it all away" by assaulting her.

The sentence is based on a single New York conviction involving Haley. Weinstein's first New York trial in 2020 resulted in convictions for a criminal sexual act involving Haley and third-degree rape involving Mann. However, New York's highest court overturned those convictions in April 2024, ordering a new trial due to improper admission of testimony not relevant to the charges.

Weinstein was retried in Manhattan in 2025 and again convicted of a first-degree criminal sexual act for the assault on Haley, while being acquitted of a separate charge involving model Kaja Sokola. The Mann case, alleging rape, remained pending until it was dismissed in June after the alleged victim requested no further testimony.

Weinstein still faces a California sentence for separate charges, with a conviction in 2022 and a 16-year prison term ordered by a California judge in June 2026.
