Essex cricketer Das charged with two counts of rape

Essex cricketer Robin Das has been formally charged with two counts of rape. The 24-year-old is set to make his first appearance at Inner London Crown Court on October 9, following his initial charge in July. Das was taken into custody on August 27, 2025, in connection with a reported rape that allegedly occurred in Brixton on March 30, 2024. The Metropolitan Police announced the charges on July 23, 2026, following the arrest.

The Metropolitan Police statement noted that Das, from Queens Road in Waltham Forest, was charged with two counts of rape. The allegations stem from his arrest on August 27, 2025, after receiving reports of a sexual assault in Brixton on March 30, 2024. The victim is being supported by specialist officers during this challenging time.

Das, a talented top-order batsman, has played 60 matches for Essex, with his last appearance for the club coming in a One-Day Cup match against Middlesex on July 21, 2026 - his sole senior game of the 2026 season. Essex confirmed that Das has been suspended from the team since his arrest, which took place two days after his final game for the club.

The Essex County Cricket Club released a statement confirming his appearance in court and emphasized their commitment to cooperating with legal authorities throughout the process. The club maintains strict safeguarding and HR policies, requiring all staff to adhere to the highest standards of conduct.

Das made his debut for Essex in 2020 and has since appeared in nine first-class matches, 29 50-over games, and 24 T20 matches. Two of his T20 appearances were with Dhaka Dominators in the Bangladesh Premier League.
