Edo Assembly backs State Police constitutional alteration bill

The Osun State House of Assembly has officially voted in favor of the Osun State Integrated Transport, Traffic and Park Management Bill, 2026. This significant legislation was passed at a plenary session on Tuesday, following successful third reading. The bill's passage comes after careful deliberation during its second reading, where lawmakers extensively examined the necessity for a structured framework to manage motor parks, garages, traffic, and transport-related activities throughout the state.

Sponsored by the Chair of the House Committee on Works and Transport, Abiola Ibrahim, the bill aims to create a comprehensive management system for the transport sector. Its primary focus will be on motor park administration, traffic management, and revenue collection. During previous debates, Ibrahim underscored that the bill would provide a more organized approach to revenue collection and management from motor parks and other transport-related activities.

He stated that it would also help the state curtail revenue leakages and enhance the management of internally generated revenue by implementing a more accountable transport revenue collection system. Ibrahim emphasized that the legislation would promote digitalization of the ticketing system and set a structured framework for motor parks' operation and administration across Osun State.

The bill includes provisions targeting thuggery, violence, extortion, and other unlawful activities linked to motor parks and garages. Lawmakers highlighted the importance of maintaining order and safety in these establishments, especially in light of recent disputes over park control and management in the state. After the legislative proceedings and consideration of the bill's provisions, the House moved to its third reading, after which the legislation was officially passed into law.

The Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun, stated that this legislation is part of ongoing efforts to establish a coordinated, transparent, and orderly system for managing transportation, traffic, and motor parks in the state. He noted that the final version of the bill would be sent to the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, for his approval.
