Domestic air passenger traffic down 6.3% in Aug, IndiGo loses market share: DGCA

Domestic air passenger traffic in India dropped 6.34% in August 2025 compared to the same month in 2025, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) report. IndiGo, the country's largest airline, saw its market share decline while Air India Group's share increased. Scheduled domestic airlines carried 12.13 million passengers in August, down from 12.95 million in August 2025.

Overall passenger traffic from January to August was 110.53 million, a slight decrease of 0.18% compared to the previous year. This marks the second consecutive decline in passenger numbers. IndiGo's market share fell to 65% in August from 67.4% in July, while Air India Group's share rose to 26.7% from 24% during the same period.

Passenger load factor, or the percentage of an airline's available seating capacity filled with paying passengers, declined in August compared to July. IndiGo's load factor fell from 82.4% to 79.2%, and Air India Group's load factor decreased from 83.2% to 77%. Complaints from passengers rose to 2,132 in August, with baggage issues being the most common.

Only 17.9% of SpiceJet's flights operated on time, the lowest among major carriers. The report attributed the decline to softer travel demand due to the reopening of schools and colleges, monsoon impact on leisure travel, and families waiting for the festive season.
