Discord Is Officially Rolling Out Its New Age Verification System Globally This Week

Discord is set to roll out a new age verification system globally this week, as announced by the company earlier this year. However, the rollout was initially delayed due to community concerns over privacy. The new system categorizes users into three age groups: Adult (18+), Teen (13–17), and Unconfirmed. Users can view their age group in the Account Status section of their User Settings menu.

According to Discord's CTO and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy, 90% of users will have their age automatically determined using account signals such as account duration, connected communities, servers, games, and activity levels. Users in the Unconfirmed category can still use Discord but with limited access to age-restricted content and settings.

To confirm their age, users can choose from various methods, including credit card verification, age-range sharing from app stores, Google Wallet, AgeKey credential service, or ID scan/video selfie. Discord has implemented measures to address privacy concerns, such as requiring third-party vendors to permanently delete submitted information and performing facial age estimation on-device to prevent data from leaving users' devices.

To protect teen users, Discord will direct messages from non-friends to the Message Requests inbox, display warnings for accepting friend requests from unknown users, restrict access to age-gated content, and limit the visibility of full profile details and activity to friends and smaller server members.
