Delhi L-G orders safety audit of all Delhi parks after Aastha Kunj gangrape

A 17-year-old girl has allegedly been gangraped by three men posing as police officers in a poorly lit park in Southeast Delhi, according to officials. The Delhi Police Commissioner, Anurag Kumar, has directed Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) from 15 districts to identify and address safety gaps in the city, including poorly lit areas and non-functional CCTV cameras.

The stretch where the incident occurred had no CCTV camera and was reportedly dark with broken walls. Kumar visited the crime scene on Tuesday to assess the park's condition. At a meeting with officials from all districts, the police chief emphasized the need for vigilance and regular patrolling of parks and isolated areas. Non-functional CCTV cameras and other safety devices should be regularly checked, and deficiencies should be reported to the relevant civic agencies.

Police officers have been instructed to maintain contact with guards at parks to prevent criminal activities. Bicycle patrols in parks have been restarted, with DCPs deploying personnel on bicycles alongside foot patrols during morning and evening hours to increase police visibility and deter petty criminals.
