DCI explains circumstances surrounding death of man found dead in Narumoru police cell

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has shed light on the circumstances surrounding the arrest and death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo at Narumoru Police Station. Osiemo, who was a former farmhand employed by the victim of the assault, was arrested in connection with an assault case reported to the station on July 2, 2026.

He allegedly assaulted and stabbed the woman multiple times before fleeing the scene. The victim was admitted to Tumutumu Hospital where she remained for nine days for treatment. The complainant later raised concerns about the case handling with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Nanyuki, which subsequently directed the DCI to investigate.

On September 3, the investigation was handed over to the DCI, and Osiemo was traced to Kisii where he was apprehended. He was initially booked at Keroka Police Station before being transferred to Narumoru Police Station on September 19. The DCI stated that Osiemo was in a normal condition upon arrest and was scheduled to be arraigned in court on September 21.

However, on the following day, September 20, Osiemo was found hanging inside the police cell. The scene was processed immediately in the presence of IPOA officers, senior police officials, and a relative. His body was then taken to Narumoru mortuary for an autopsy. The DCI has taken over the investigation into Osiemo's death and has pledged its full cooperation with the IPOA.

The agency expressed its deepest condolences to the victim's family and friends, assuring them of its commitment to a transparent process in determining the full circumstances of his death. The DCI also urged the public to rely on verified information and cautioned against drawing conclusions from unverified claims circulating on social media.
