Crowd of Angry Citizens Loses It After City Council Fast-Tracks Resolution on Flock AI Cameras

A heated protest erupted in Springfield, Missouri on Monday after the city council swiftly approved a resolution concerning Flock AI surveillance cameras. The voting outcome, 5-3, saw the resolution swiftly forwarded to the city's planning committee, effectively sidestepping a public hearing. Local footage captured by KY3 news revealed the crowd's outrage as they stormed out of the council chambers in protest.

"Worthless!" cried an unnamed resident, while another lamented, "What I’m trying to do is get people answers to some real questions that they’ve brought to us for months."

Councilmember Brandon Jenson attempted to open the floor for public comments, expressing disappointment with the decision. "It’s a shame that it comes down to this sort of, I guess, theater… to try and help get those answers — this isn’t how government is supposed to run," he lamented. "And we’re not even allowing the folks to speak who clearly came out to share their voices tonight."

The resolution's ultimate fate remains uncertain. If enacted, it would compel a review of the city police department's use of Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs), a technology notorious for abuse in various law enforcement agencies nationwide.

Isaac Protiva, an organizer with the anti-ALPR group Flock Out SGF, expressed skepticism about the resolution's implications. "It just makes me wonder where we’re trying to go if something as straightforward as this gets referred to a policy committee to be shelved until who knows when," he told KY3. "It just makes me question where this city goes and honestly makes me question how much I want to invest in this city as a young person that moved here from deeper in the Ozarks."
