Constitution shouldn’t be amended simply because years have passed – IEA

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has cautioned against amending Ghana's Constitution simply due to the passage of time. While acknowledging the arguments on both sides of the constitutional review debate, the IEA representative emphasized the need for a continuous assessment of the Constitution's functionality. They argued that this continuous examination does not mandate amendments at predetermined intervals.

"We should continuously examine how the Constitution is functioning," the IEA representative stated. "But that does not mean the Constitution must be amended simply because a particular number of years have passed. Constitutional maintenance should be continuous, even if constitutional amendments are occasional." These comments come as there is ongoing debate about the review process of Ghana's 1992 Constitution and proposals for reforms to address gaps in the country's governance.

The IEA stressed that the priority should be ensuring the Constitution's effective functioning rather than automatically amending it because of time's passage.
