China’s US ambassador warns on ‘red lines’ ahead of Trump, Xi meeting

China's ambassador to the United States has cautioned that there are limits to what Beijing will tolerate on matters such as Taiwan, human rights, and differing development paths ahead of a summit with President Donald Trump. Xi Jinping is set to visit Washington for talks that aim to stabilize relations strained by issues ranging from trade disputes to the status of Taiwan.

Ambassador Xie Feng's warning, published in the official People's Daily, emphasizes the importance of managing disagreements through mutual trust, stating that both nations stand to gain or lose when they interact. The ambassador laid out four "red lines" that China will not cross: Taiwan's sovereignty, democratic and human rights considerations, differing development paradigms, and economic interests.

China, which views the self-governing island of Taiwan as its own territory, has long been at odds with the United States, a major arms supplier and supporter of Taipei. Xie Feng suggested that healthy diplomacy is crucial for smoothing over disputes, noting that the recent difficulties in US-China relations stem from misperceptions and a persistent focus on strategic competition.

The newspaper's commentary, written under the pseudonym "Zhong Sheng," echoed Xie's concerns, urging the US to stabilize its policies, honor agreements, and provide certainty to bolster bilateral ties.
