Chilean Defense Committee meets in Punta Arenas to address pretensions over Magellan sovereignty

The Chilean Defense Committee will convene in Punta Arenas next Friday to discuss matters related to defense budget, armed forces capabilities, and austral sovereignty, especially concerning the Magellan Strait. This meeting is taking place in the wake of renewed Argentine claims over the territory. Key attendees include the Minister of Defense, members of Congress involved in foreign relations, armed forces branch commanders, regional unit heads, and heads of the Austral Command.

The meeting aims to address the sensitive strategic defense issues, naval procurement, and Chilean sovereignty over the strategic maritime passage. Chilean Vice-President Claudio Alvarado emphasized the importance of this anniversary, recalling the 183rd year since the country's undisputed possession of the Magellan Strait. This feat was accomplished by the schooner 'Ancud', which arrived at the Strait on September 21st, 1843, raising the Chilean flag and solidifying the country's presence in the far reaches of South America.

Alvarado highlighted the bravery of the 'Ancud' crew and officers, who faced challenges and never wavered in their commitment. The Defense Committee represents the will of the people, and Alvarado stressed the necessity for all branches of government to prioritize the well-being of Chile's austral territory and waters. The Vice-President also addressed the growing military expenditure by Argentina and the need for Chile to focus on its defense capabilities and security, given its GDP percentage.

When approached by the press, Alvarado reaffirmed Chile's indisputable sovereignty over the Magellan Strait, emphasizing that the existing Treaties of 1881 and 1984 must be respected. He promised to discuss with President Antonio Kast the possibility of nominating the 21st of September as a regional holiday in Magallanes, a long-standing desire of locals.
