At least 11 dead in mass shooting at house party in South Africa

A mass shooting in a residential building near Durban, South Africa, has claimed at least eleven lives. Gunmen entered a house in the KwaMakhutha township on Tuesday evening and opened fire on fourteen individuals. Ten victims died at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital. Police indicate that some of the victims were involved in illegal activities, though the exact nature of these activities remains undisclosed to safeguard ongoing investigations.

While the motive behind the shooting remains unconfirmed, police have not ruled out the possibility of a feud between rival groups. The victims included thirteen men and one pregnant woman who was among the fatalities. Witnesses reported that the gunmen, along with one other individual, had arrived at the scene to a party and proceeded to shoot.

The woman who was pregnant died during the attack. Footage from the scene showed a vehicle belonging to one of the victims set ablaze by the assailants before they fled. Police have initiated a manhunt for the suspects responsible. South Africa is known for having one of the highest murder rates globally, with an average of over 60 deaths per day.

Recently, the grisly discovery of nine murdered women, some of whose bodies were found discarded by the roadside, has intensified public concern. Last year, nine people were killed in a mass shooting at a tavern in Johannesburg. Criminal gang rivalries, fueled by turf wars, drug trafficking, and illegal mining, are prevalent in the country and frequently contribute to community violence.

In February, President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged organized crime as the most pressing threat to democracy, society, and economic development, vowing to deploy the army to assist the police. Recent grim discoveries of murdered women have sparked fear among South Africans.
