Yuletide: FG approves fresh imports of 830,000MT petrol

The Nigerian Federal Government has approved fresh imports of 830,000 metric tonnes of petrol for the fourth quarter of 2026, in preparation for the Yuletide season. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority made the latest approval to ensure adequate supply during the festive period. This latest allocation comes amid rising domestic refining capacity, particularly with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which has challenged the regulator's continued issuance of petrol import licences.

The 830,000MT approval represents a significant increase from previous allocations, with six major petroleum marketers set to receive the permits. Despite the increase in local production, Nigeria remains reliant on imported petrol, with domestic refineries supplying 76.7 per cent of the country's total petrol supply in the first quarter of 2026.
