Velocys unveils AlphaCore 800 reactor for commercial aviation fuel production

Sustainable fuel company Velocys launched its AlphaCore 800 microchannel reactor model to increase production capacity and lower unit costs for commercial sustainable aviation fuel projects

Houston and Oxford, England, September 21, 2026 - Velocys, a company specializing in Fischer-Tropsch technology for sustainable fuels, has unveiled its latest innovation: the AlphaCore™ 800 reactor. This reactor represents the highest capacity microchannel Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor to date, capable of producing up to 800 barrels of FT fluids, or 30,000 tonnes per year, from a single unit.

This marks a doubling of AlphaCore 400's capacity and extends Velocys' throughput-based AlphaCore reactor family from around 50 to 800 barrels per day per reactor (2 to 30 kt/a per reactor).

The AlphaCore 800 is specifically designed for larger sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and e-fuels projects. It aims to cater to SAF plants targeting approximately 100,000 tonnes per year and beyond. By increasing the reactor size while retaining the same chemistry and design, Velocys is able to produce more FT capacity per reactor.

This allows for fewer reactors to be used as project scales increase, without compromising performance or reliability. A reduced number of reactors can simplify the FT island, minimize required equipment, and lower unit costs.

Matthew Viergutz, Velocys' CEO, explained that customers are requesting the company to bring its microchannel FT technology into larger projects with more straightforward configurations. AlphaCore 800 is a direct response to this demand. As SAF projects grow toward 100,000 tonnes per year and beyond, Velocys is increasing capacity per reactor so developers can configure larger FT plants with fewer units while building upon the technology platform and operating experience already established by Velocys.

The AlphaCore 800 joins Velocys' reactor portfolio, which already includes the AlphaCore 50, 200, and 400 models. This range of throughput-based reactors, built using the same core technology, can be applied across various project scales and syngas pathways. Velocys' roadmap reflects the increasing market demand for scalable SAF and e-fuels production, as developers seek to reduce plant complexity, improve repeatability, and strengthen the commercial case for larger FT-based projects.
