NMDPRA threatens to revoke petrol stations’ licences over under-dispensing

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has issued a stern warning to petrol station operators regarding under-dispensing of petroleum products, threatening to revoke their licenses for persistent or serious violations. In a circular published in Abuja, the authority highlighted numerous instances of under-dispensing observed at retail outlets across the country.

The NMDPRA emphasized that this practice constitutes a significant breach of consumer trust and will not be accepted. They have instructed all retail outlet operators to promptly calibrate and verify their dispensers and totalizers to ensure precise measurement of petroleum products.

The authority stressed that such measures are essential to safeguard consumer interests and guarantee that individuals receive the complete value of the product they purchase. The NMDPRA has intensified its inspection and enforcement efforts nationwide, and outlets found under-dispensing or using improperly calibrated equipment must take immediate corrective action.

Failure to comply with the directive could result in appropriate sanctions, including the revocation of the outlet's license. The regulator also called on major energy marketer associations to inform their members about the directive, as they are expected to aid in ensuring compliance across the industry.
