Turkey student arrested after 11 injured in shotgun shooting

A student armed with a rifle opened fire in front of Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu district, Manisa province, Turkey on Tuesday morning, September 22, 2026, according to broadcaster NTV. The attack resulted in eight pupils being wounded, with two of them in critical condition. The local governor's office confirmed the assailant was apprehended shortly after the incident at 07:59.

Images and videos shared online depicted a male figure walking on a street near the school with a rifle in his hands, before running back from the same area. The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this time. School officials warned parents not to rush to the school in panic, emphasizing the safety of everyone and the evacuation process for the students. The school premises were not the location of the shooting.

This marks a concerning escalation in school violence in Turkey, with two deadly incidents in April prompting authorities to implement stricter security measures for the 2026-2027 academic year, including enhanced gun control regulations. Prior to these attacks, Turkey had not experienced any such incidents. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz announced that Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci and Education Minister Yusuf Tekin would visit Manisa to conduct investigations into the recent events.
