Student opens fire outside school in Turkey, eight pupils wounded, NTV reports

A student wielding a rifle opened fire in front of the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turkey's western Manisa province on Tuesday, injuring at least eight fellow students, according to broadcaster NTV. Two of the wounded pupils are in critical condition, reported NTV. The perpetrator was apprehended, announced the local governor's office on the social media platform X. Images and video footage captured a man in a street adjacent to the school carrying a rifle, which he later discarded as he fled the scene.

The reason behind the attack remains unknown at this time. The tragic incident follows two deadly school shootings in April, which sparked widespread outrage in Turkey and prompted authorities to implement stricter gun control measures for the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year. Prior to these regulations, Turkey had not experienced such occurrences.

Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz indicated that Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci and Education Minister Yusuf Tekin would travel to Manisa to conduct investigations.
