Trump urges compete isolation of Iran, expects deal after election

U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations on Tuesday, advocating for a complete economic embargo against Iran. He made it clear that he had no intention of restarting talks at the assembly, but expressed optimism that a deal could be reached after the U.S. midterm elections in November.

Iran had previously hinted at the possibility of restarting negotiations to end their seven-month-long conflict. The presidents of both nations were scheduled to attend the UN in New York. According to a senior Iranian official, Iran could potentially reopen the Strait of Hormuz to Gulf shipping within seven days if the U.S. complied with Iran's demands to ease military pressure and lift the American blockade on Iranian ports. Tehran had relayed its latest proposal to Washington through mediators the previous week.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed to NBC's "Today" show that the U.S. was willing to engage in discussions with Iran, particularly if it could lead to positive outcomes and ultimately achieve the ultimate objective of resolving the situation. However, in a confrontational speech at the UN, Trump gave no indication of being willing to make concessions. He called on all nations to assist in enforcing the imposed sanctions.
