Trump returns to UN at a moment of anxiety about Iran, AI and the future of world body itself

President Donald Trump is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, amid significant uncertainty both for the world and his own presidency. This comes at a moment where the global economy has been impacted by his decision to engage in a war against Iran, and there is heightened concern over the social implications of artificial intelligence.

Additionally, questions persist regarding the future of the United Nations itself, given Trump's reduction of U.S. financial contributions to the organization.

Following his speech to the annual assembly, Trump is set to meet with British Prime Minister Andrea Burnham, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodríguez. Furthermore, he will engage in informal discussions with leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council nations, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, to deliberate on the ongoing conflict in Iran and the growing apprehension surrounding Iran-backed rebels' attacks on Saudi Arabia.

The visit to the U.N. is particularly significant as Trump's foreign policy, particularly his initiation of the war with Iran, has hindered his fellow Republicans' prospects of retaining control of both chambers of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. Nonetheless, administration officials anticipate Trump will use his address to argue that the world is better off under his leadership.

Ambassador Mike Waltz, Trump's chief envoy to the international body, stated that the president will emphasize how his administration has effectively tackled complex issues around the globe. Waltz also hinted that Trump may have reconsidered some of his longstanding criticisms of the United Nations.
