On September 21, President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United States to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. The two leaders are set to attend the U.N. General Assembly in New York, where numerous diplomats and world leaders are convening to address global issues. In addition to their scheduled meetings, Zelensky mentioned that around 20 other discussions with officials and organizations were planned during his visit.

President Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine's primary goal is to bring peace closer and safeguard the safety of its citizens. He shared a written statement on X after landing in New York, expressing that both concrete security proposals and de-escalation measures are being developed to bring the conflict to an end. The Ukrainian president stressed that efforts are being made to enhance air defense systems and provide adequate funding for Ukraine.

Zelensky's recent conversation with Trump on September 20 led him to believe that the upcoming meeting could significantly impact the situation. He unveiled plans to discuss a potential temporary suspension of strikes against energy infrastructure and Black Sea targets between Ukraine and Russia. Furthermore, Zelensky proposed strengthening security measures to prevent Russia from targeting Ukraine's energy sector, critical infrastructure, and food exports.

The Ukrainian leader also conveyed that the aggressor, in this case, Russia, should be held accountable for its actions. He commented on X that the dynamics of modern warfare now mean that the aggressor will suffer as well. In response to Zelensky's remarks, Trump stated on September 21 that the war has caused significant damage to Russia's oil refining industry and called for an end to the hostilities.

However, experts have disputed Trump's claim that Ukrainian strikes against Russian refineries have contributed to rising global diesel prices.

The meeting between Zelensky and Trump comes as the U.S. continues its efforts to negotiate a resolution to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began over four and a half years ago. Earlier in September, Trump's representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, traveled to both Kyiv and Moscow to promote peace talks. These talks had been stagnant for several months due to Russia's territorial demands and the U.S.'s shifting focus towards the Iran conflict.

Additionally, the visit of President Zelensky follows the signing of a major sanctions bill by Trump, granting him the power to impose a 100% tariff on major Russian oil and gas buyers. The U.S. State Department has also authorized a potential $2.7 billion sale of air defenses to Ukraine. Despite the diplomatic progress, Zelensky remains cautious about the continuation of active warfare during the winter months, when Russia is expected to launch a new assault on Ukrainian cities and the energy grid.

To fortify its defenses, Ukraine is seeking additional U.S.-made Patriot missile interceptors and is in discussions with the U.S. for licenses to manufacture them within Ukraine. Zelensky had previously met with Trump on July 28 during his prior visit to New York, and he will also meet with other prominent foreign officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during his stay in the city.
