Kamalanathan urges update to tuition centre guidelines

KUALA LUMPUR: Former deputy education minister P. Kamalanathan has called for an update to tuition centre guidelines on the ministry's website, following the elimination of the 30 per cent Bumiputera equity requirement. He hopes this move will prevent any future misunderstandings. Kamalanathan welcomed the decision by the ministry, stating that it should also confirm whether the removal pertains to both new applications and those seeking licence renewals for existing centres.

Kamalanathan believes that tuition centres should be evaluated based on teacher quality, student safety, and learning outcomes, rather than the ethnic composition of their shareholders. He thanked the ministry and the investment, trade, and industry ministry for listening to various stakeholders and maintaining an open approach in the education sector. The former Hulu Selangor MP pledged to continue collaborating with the government to elevate education standards for all Malaysian children.

On Monday, the education ministry eliminated the mandate requiring private education institutions to have a minimum of 30 per cent Bumiputera ownership. The ministry mentioned that this decision was made after consultations with the investment, trade, and industry ministry.
