Tough talks ahead in proposed Umno-PAS GE16 pact, says analysts

Analysts warn of difficult negotiations ahead in a potential Umno-PAS agreement for the 16th Malaysian general election (GE16). PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has insisted that the four northern states – Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perlis – collectively known as the "SG4", should hold their elections simultaneously with GE16.

This stance reflects PAS's desire to maintain control over these states, which currently comprise about 90% of PAS-held seats. Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan suggested testing early polls in Terengganu to assess PAS's commitment to partnership with Barisan Nasional (BN). However, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man dismissed this proposal, reaffirming the Islamic party's intention to defend its current seat allocation and rejecting early elections in Terengganu, citing the stability of the Terengganu government and the unnecessary costs such moves would impose on voters.

Political analysts suggest that seat negotiations between Umno and PAS will likely need to be conducted state-by-state, with Melaka potentially serving as an early test of their cooperation. Both parties appear resolute in their control of seats they currently hold, making a comprehensive Umno-PAS collaboration ahead of GE16 seem unlikely at present.
