Second U.S. F-16 fighter jet crash in 1 week, this time in Germany

An F-16 fighter jet belonging to the U.S. Air Force's 52nd Fighter Wing experienced a crash at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany on Tuesday afternoon, according to the 52nd Fighter Wing. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time.

The aircraft plummeted to the ground during an exercise involving multiple aircraft. The pilot managed to eject from the jet safely and promptly received medical attention from emergency responders on the scene. An investigation into the crash is currently underway, with officials stating that "additional information will be released as it becomes available."

German air traffic control reported that the crash was the result of an exercise, leading other planes to divert to Ramstein air base. Emergency crews from the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district's fire and disaster-protection services swiftly responded to the scene. One individual was reported injured, though the district could not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The 52nd Fighter Wing operates F-16 fighter jets to support U.S. and NATO missions. A similar incident occurred in October 2019, when a U.S. F-16 crashed near Zemmer-Rodt, south of the base, during a routine training flight. The pilot in this incident also ejected and sustained minor injuries. The German Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the current crash.
