Singapore's Gan Ching Hwee clinches Asian Games silver in 400m freestyle, registers another national record

South Korean fencer Song Se-ra clinched the gold medal in the women's epee individual event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games held in Japan on Tuesday. This marked South Korea's first fencing gold at the Asian Games in Japan. Song triumphed over Kiria Tikanah Abdul Rahman of Singapore with a score of 15-8 in the final match at Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, around 35 kilometers south of Nagoya, the main host city of the Games.

This victory marked South Korea's first fencing gold at the Asian Games, which officially commenced on Saturday. Song had previously secured a silver medal at the last Asian Games. The bronze medals were awarded to Tamaki Terayama of Japan and Yang Jingwen of China. In epee fencing, fencers utilize a thrusting weapon that can target the entire body.

The individual event requires the fencer who accumulates more points after three three-minute bouts to emerge victorious, or the first to reach 15 points. Compared to her close 15-14 victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals, the final bout went relatively easy for Song. In the first round, she dropped two points but then scored three points in a row, taking a 3-2 lead. She further extended her lead in the subsequent rounds.
