Karate exponent Adeola delivers Malaysia’s first gold in her Asian Games debut

In a remarkable Asian Games debut, Malaysian karate prodigy Adeola Fay Robert secured the nation's first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games held at Toyohashi Gymnasium. The 20-year-old Sabah-born athlete delivered an impressive performance in the women's under-55kg kumite final, defeating Iran's Fatemehzahra Saeidabadi with a score of 6-4.

Adeola advanced to the final after triumphing over Kazakhstan's Bella Samasheva (5-4) in the semi-finals, following wins over Kuwait's Asrar Jasem (9-1) and Uzbekistan's Sevinch Rakhimova (8-7) in the preliminary rounds. This victory marks Malaysia's first women's karate gold medal, ending a prolonged wait for such a triumph. The country's previous women's karate gold came from Syakilla Salni at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

Adeola expressed surprise at her success, stating that she simply aimed to give her best without worrying too much about the outcome. She joined the national squad in December 2024, following her coach R. Sharmendran's recognition of her talent and potential at the international level.
