Schools trial AI leak detection technology to save water

The NSW government is piloting artificial intelligence technology to detect water leaks in schools, government buildings and public housing. The initiative could save around 2,700 megalitres of water annually, according to Jethro Laidlaw, the head of water efficiency programs for the government. By analyzing data from smart meters, the system can pinpoint leaks before issuing alerts to relevant agencies.

The technology, developed by Griffith University, is estimated to reduce water losses caused by leaks by 20%. Griffith University professor Rodney Stewart explained that the system turns the flood of smart meter data into a clear roadmap for maintenance teams, ensuring they address the right leaks at the right time. The leak detection portal enables site managers to monitor multiple locations simultaneously, eliminating the need for numerous individual logins.

The project, funded by a $4 million investment through the NSW Water Efficiency Program, has already been tested by Tamworth Regional Council, Central Coast Council and Hunter Water. Work is currently underway to secure Sydney Water's involvement in the pilot. Laidlaw emphasized the importance of launching the trial before another drought, as the state faces a strong El Niño forecast until at least autumn 2027.

Water Minister Rose Jackson stressed that the technology would save both water and taxpayer money from being wasted, particularly as the state enters drier summer conditions. The system has the potential to be extended to other sectors and even homes, enabling households and businesses to better manage their water consumption.
