River Ryan makes strong debut and Tigers hit 3 home runs in 9-2 win over Nationals

Detroit Tigers' River Ryan made an impressive debut, pitching three scoreless innings in the team's 9-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Monday night. Ryan, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal trade, allowed only two hits and a walk, with two strikeouts to his credit. Keider Montero pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Ryan.

The Tigers took an early lead in the first inning, with Gleyber Torres walking, advancing to second on a wild pitch, and scoring on a ground-rule double from Hao-Yu Lee. Eduardo Valencia added to the Tigers' lead in the fourth inning, hitting a single to left field and scoring when James Wood made an error on a ground ball play.

Javier Báez then drove in four runs in the fourth inning, hitting his third homer of the season over the Tigers' bullpen in left to bring in Dillon Dingler. The Tigers added five more runs in the fifth inning, with Ben Malgeri's fourth homer and two home runs by Spencer Torkelson.

The Nationals managed to score two runs in the eighth inning, with Yohandy Morales hitting a two-run homer. Despite this, the Tigers maintained their lead and went on to win the game 9-2. The Tigers announced before the game that Comerica Park will be renamed Fifth Third Park starting in 2027, the same name as the stadium for Detroit's Triple-A team, the Toledo Mud Hens. The teams will continue their three-game series on Tuesday, with Detroit's Drew Anderson facing Jackson Kent.
