Philippines, EU move closer to a free-trade agreement after decade of talks

Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu announced on Tuesday that negotiations for separate free trade agreements with the Philippines and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) are significantly advanced, with both sides aiming for completion by November. Speaking at a meeting of Southeast Asian economic ministers in Manila, Sidhu emphasized the strong commitment from both parties to finalize the deals.

The trade push aligns with Canada's broader strategy to diversify economic relationships and strengthen supply chains amid increasing global uncertainties. Sidhu clarified that Canada's efforts to deepen ties with Southeast Asia are not focused on any single country and are not primarily driven by changes in U.S. trade policy.

Highlighting energy as Canada's most significant offering to the region, Sidhu noted that the country boasts more than five liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in various stages of development along its Pacific coast, aimed at supplying Asian markets. As Southeast Asian economies increasingly seek to diversify their fuel supplies and mitigate geopolitical risks, Canada's growing LNG capacity presents a valuable opportunity.

Sidhu elaborated that Canada has pledged financial support for the Luzon Economic Corridor, a prominent manufacturing hub on the Philippines' largest island. He expressed interest in investing in areas such as energy, data centers, and related infrastructure. Sidhu observed increasing demand for artificial intelligence and digital services in the Philippines, which presents promising opportunities for Canadian investment.

While Sidhu did not provide an estimate of the potential investment resulting from a trade agreement with the Philippines, he emphasized that such agreements typically encourage companies to pursue new projects and partnerships by demonstrating government support for closer economic ties.
