Parents urged to seek early treatment for childhood cancer

Health officials are urging parents to seek prompt medical care if they observe unusual symptoms in their children. This advice was given by Prof Vivian Paintsil, Head of the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, during a walk in Kumasi to raise awareness about childhood cancer. September has been designated as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month worldwide to highlight the importance of early detection and treatment for children suffering from cancer.

In Kumasi, health professionals distributed flyers and educated the public on the warning signs of childhood cancer. This campaign is being carried out jointly by the Pediatric Society of Ghana and the Childhood Cancer Society of Ghana. Professor Paintsil emphasized that while children can indeed get cancer, early treatment can lead to a high cure rate.

She suggested that parents should not dismiss symptoms such as weight loss, frequent bleeding, lumps, swellings, or a white spot in a child's eye as normal. Additionally, persistent morning vomiting, especially in cases of suspected brain tumours, should also raise concerns about childhood cancer.

Despite the fear many parents may have about a cancer diagnosis, Prof Paintsil urged them not to let this stop them from seeking necessary medical help. She stressed that although the news of a cancer diagnosis can be frightening, it is crucial to bring the child to a healthcare professional for appropriate management. Furthermore, Prof Paintsil called for increased collaboration among stakeholders to enhance childhood cancer care and research in Ghana.

Efforts are being made through the Childhood Cancer Society of Ghana to secure support for the establishment of a dedicated childhood cancer research centre. She reiterated the importance of early intervention, urging parents to bring their children to healthcare facilities promptly if they notice any of the warning signs.
