AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine promotes inclusion through neurodiversity awareness programme

AngloGold Ashanti's Obuasi Mine is ramping up its efforts to foster inclusion and combat stigma around autism and other developmental conditions. The company, in collaboration with local organizations and the Ghana Education Service, recently conducted a two-day awareness and capacity-building program for educators, parents, caregivers, and community members.

The first day of the program focused on sensitizing the community about autism and other developmental conditions. Participants learned about early signs, identification, and support options for individuals with developmental needs. Specialists from Fafanto Psych and Wellness Consult provided confidential screenings and consultations for parents and caregivers, guiding them on developmental concerns and intervention pathways.

The second day concentrated on equipping teachers with practical skills to identify learners with developmental differences and create inclusive classroom environments. Through a workshop organized with the Ghana Education Service, educators gained expertise in applying differentiated teaching methods and utilizing assistive learning tools to enhance participation and learning outcomes for all students.

Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei, Gender and Social Development Superintendent of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, emphasized that inclusion starts with understanding and acceptance. She highlighted that every child has the right to learn, develop, and reach their full potential. By fostering a supportive environment, teachers and families can help children with developmental differences thrive.

The program also served as a forum for participants to address misconceptions and challenges associated with autism and other developmental conditions. Discussions underscored the importance of early identification, professional support, family acceptance, and community involvement.
