The victims of these cases ranged from a seven-year-old who was doxxed to a 68-year-old who faced online harassment. Around 17% of the eligible reports involved young victims under 18 years old. The most common types of online harm experienced by these youths were online harassment (51%), doxxing (31%), and image-based child abuse (11%).
In terms of gender, men and women were affected at nearly equal rates. The OSC has taken action to resolve many of the online harm cases. For instance, in a case of online sexual harassment, the OSC issued a direction that led to the removal of harmful content after the victim received unsolicited explicit content and had her likeness used in over 1,000 posts across multiple platforms.
Similarly, in a case of prolonged online harassment and stalking, the OSC flagged the social media accounts involved, resulting in their removal for violating community guidelines. The commission also referred the victim for counseling and guidance.
In a doxxing case, the OSC issued an Access Disabling Direction to a forum where the victim was targeted due to a post making negative allegations about her character. The forum complied, disabling the original post and the identified comment.
